Hugin is a free panoramic photo stitcher. I’ve had a lot of trial and error trying to get game screenshots to work and to be honest, I think I could get better results. So I thought I’d share the settings I use in case anyone else finds it useful and also in case anyone has any tips for me.
Taking screenshots:
You need to have overlap between each shot. Ideally something detailed. (In the pictures below, there is a small green tree in the left and centre pictures and the larger tree with vines for the centre and right pictures)
- Assistant Tab. Load images, popup with lens data. Rectilinear Lens and Horizontal Field of View of 90°.
- Camera and Lens Tab. Choose a new lens for each image (right hand menu)
- Images Tab. Create control points using Hugin CPFind.
- Control Points Tab. check they make sense and are matching up the correct parts of the screenshots.

5. Optimiser Tab. Choose Positions and Barrel (y,p,r,b) or Positions, View and Barrel. Accept changes.
6. Preview Pane (new window) Open the preview pane. Here I centre, straighten and crop the image. Mode (left menu) = mosaic

7. Stitcher Tab. (previous window) Stitch (bottom right) and save.
8. Open the TIFF file (final panorama file) in paint or similar and save as .png or .jpg

I’ve had best results (as in least loss) where the focal point is at the horizon. If there are objects close to you in the left and/or right views, it seems to cause more distortion of the image and therefore loss. If you’re interested, if you take a look at my previous post of panoramas, you can see that the images with less in the foreground (Skyrim and outside Aldburg) have far less vertical loss than the other shots.
